ALOR STAR, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- Umno Youth executive committee (exco) member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir Saturday announced that he would contest the wing's top post in the December party elections.
Mukhriz, 44, said the decision was made based on increasing support for him, especially after the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat by-election on Aug 26, besides his own feeling of responsibility to serve the people more through that position.
Prior to this, the Jerlun member of parliament had voiced his concern over money politics said to occur in the branch elections which could foil his chances of vying for the top post.
However, he said, he should be optimistic and hope for a "miracle" to enable him to garner enough nominations to enable him to contest the post although some of his strongholds were also shaken by the scourge of money politics.
Besides Mukhriz, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, Umno Youth exco member Datuk Seri Mohamad Khir Toyo, its deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor are also expected to go for the post.
The Umno Youth chief post will be made vacant following the incumbent Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein's decision not to seek re-election.
Mukhriz, meanwhile, promised that he would not hold any post in government if given the mandate to lead Umno Youth.
He also announced his manifesto if elected to the post, which included bringing about change by getting more young people to join the party, by injecting spirit through implicit and explicit means, paying attention to the problems of the people and determining the direction of the people, especially youths.
