Majlis Peguam - Hari Hak Asasi Manusia

Kuala Lumpur - The Bar Council today organised a celebration of the International Human Rights Day at the Council's office in Jalan Leboh Pasar Besar. The following pictorial presentation best sums up some of the activities held :-

Falung Qung public awareness - on the activities and atrocities committed against the movement by the Chinese government, in particular the illegal harvesting of human organs from live donors.

Welcoming address by the Council's President - Ms Ambiga

Reading of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Forum on 'When Faith Meets Law'. Among the panel members were from left, rep from Taoist Association, Mr Hargopal from the Sikh Association, Dato Vithialingam from Hindu Sangam and Prof Dr Shad Saleem Farouqi, Federal Consitution Expert from UITM.

Traditional 'Sewang' dance by representatives from the Semai tribe of Ulu Slim, Perak.

The following eye witness account was in relation to the 'Morning Walk' organised by members of the Council. The walk was organised impromptu when the Council backed out from their initial plan when faced with 'insurmountable' pressures from various quarters.

The walk started peacefully and without incidence from the Sogo shopping complex at 7.50 am and along the Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Final destination was the Council's office at Jalan Leboh Pasar Besar approximately 2 kms away. However upon reaching the Bank of Commerce Jalan Tun Perak branch, the police intervened and requested the 50 odd crowd to disperse. A shouting match ensued and four of the lawyers who led were taken away by the police. They were Amer hamzah Arshad, Latheefa Beebi Koya, N.Surendran and K.Sivarasa

An activist by the name of Nooraza Othman was also hauled in. She was the loudest of them all, shouting and screaming at the police on her rights

Even an attempt to pacify her by a lawyer blogger failed

A blardy provocateur from Nagore (where on earth is that) was also hauled in after his incessant provocative remarks. His name was later found out to be Ashraf Ali Sadakathullah. Obviously he was trying to attract attention of the photographers and videographers

An obvious attempt by supporters of Khairy Jamaluddin

A Corporal from the DBKL Enforcement Unit seen having a difficult time trying to press on a point of law

When negotiations failed, the usual 'operating procedures' were applied

A tinge of arrogance and style still prevailed

In most confrontations, the man in uniform will have the final say .... Desmond Bon, Chairman of Human Rights Committee and a Board Member of The Bar Council was taken away by Police for obstructing DBKL Enforcement officers from removing event banners
