Diva gives fans memorable time

KUALA LUMPUR: Fans of Dionne Warwick were taken on a stroll down memory lane yesterday when the five-time Grammy winner performed some of her greatest hits at a dinner show at Shangri-La hotel here.

“We hope to create pleasant memories,” she told the 1,000-plus crowd at the start of the performance, which lasted more than an hour.

That she certainly did, when she belted out evergreen numbers like Close to You, I'll Never Fall in Love Again, Heartbreaker and an upbeat version of Say a Little Prayer.

The pop diva is no stranger to Malaysia having performed here last year for a charity event. During an interview with local media before her performance, Warwick said she would love to return to perform again.

“I have been coming here since the 1960s and I have seen Malaysia develop. It's very much an oasis now and I would love to come back,” she said.

She even recalls coming here to participate in the celebrity charity tennis championships that were organised in the 1980s and expressed the hope that they would be organised again.
“I would love to do that again,” she added.

This year marks her 47th year in showbiz. Her reputation as a hit-maker stems from her more than 60 hits that began with the single Don't Make Me Over that was released in 1962. Warwick's success is closely linked to composers Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Together, the three of them had 20 top-40 US hits in the 1960s alone.

“I have too many wonderful memories,” she said.

Warwick performed here as part of the Kuala Lumpur Live & Loud 07 music festival. The festival will also feature her niece Whitney Houston, with whom she may record a duet soon, as well as other stars like James Ingram, Kool & The Gang, James Morrison, Rick Price and Elliot Yamin who will all be performing in the next couple of days.
