Ziryab Pop Opera Concert

Venue : Plenary Hall, KL Convention Centre

Guest artistes : Ning Baizura & Mawi.

Note : Ning Baizura was slotted for Monday's dinner show at Shangri-la Hotel, however due to imigration and visa problems, the Lebanese artistes who were supposed to performe that night were unable to make it in time. The organiser therefore decided to include Ning in tonight's show. I was late half an hour and managed to say hello to Ning and her manager whilst on their way out of KLCC.

Biggest surprise for the night was Mawi's attempt to converse in English with the audience. It ws a very brave effort by Mawi and deserved appreciative repsonses from the crowd.

Egyptian Sobhi Bedeir recently re-emerged as a preofessional crooner, backing his voice with a sound system rather than a live band where he succeeded in winning an unlimited number or admirers from the younger generation.

Demonstrating his extraordinary musical talent, Bedeir started as a soloist, singing his way into the hearts of enthusiastic audiences, who flkocked from all over the country to his Italian, Spanish, English and French num, bers. With the help of his friend Nayer Nagui, musician, composer and keyboard virtuoso, Bedeir turned into Egypt’s mic star.

As time went by, he called upon his ‘friends’ mostly young singers on their hopeful way to stardom, turned them into a choir and called the show ‘Sobhi and Friends’.

Bedeir’s friends are 16 at present, with baritone Elahami Amin, soprano Jacqueline Rafik, Sadek Gallini, while the ever-present Nayer Nagui crowns the shows with his remarkable musical arrangements and extraordinary keyboard techniques.

Today, Sobhi Bedeir has become synonymous with spectacular summertime shows reminiscent of kaftan-clad Dennis Roussos, performing at the Gezira Sporting Club in the early 1980s. Already applauded as Radames and operatic heroes, Bedeir became a professional crooner, demonstrating his up-tempo authority and amazing talent.
